More Than Stats

Story Written by Mark Gregory

In media we at times get caught up in wins/loses, we get overwhelmed by stats, or we try to put a storyline on an upcoming event. Sometimes though, we seem to forget the other side of it. The struggles of being a student athlete, what got them to this point, or just simply thanking them for all the memories. May we take the time to recognize an outstanding athlete, competitor, and leader — Rachel Howard.

First off, let's start with some stats Rachel has made her mark in two sports at Pineville. On the basketball court, she has scored an impressive 1,807 points and pulled down 1,074 rebounds. On the softball field, before tonight's game, Rachel stands at 1859 career strikeouts. 324 strikeouts in 2021 299 in 2022 275 in 2023 327 in 2024 346 in 2025 With a career total of 1859 strikeouts it places her among the all time elite, she is chasing history—closing in on the all-time state record of 1,964 strikeouts, held by Montana Fouts, with the second-place mark within reach at 1,865.

Rachel’s journey began around the age of eight, simply playing catch with her dad. What started as casual throwing quickly became something more. With a natural ability to adjust and learn, Rachel could take any instruction and immediately apply it. Even while balancing travel basketball with lifelong friends, her foundation in softball was quietly taking shape.

Her family knew she needed strong guidance, which led them on a path to find the right coaches. From early training in Knoxville, to finding Dana White in Corbin—who helped build Rachel’s fundamentals and develop her signature changeup—each step shaped her growth.

After Dana returned to Texas, Rachel continued her journey with Denny Tincher of Tincher Pitching in Roanoke, Virginia, and later with April Charles at the University of Pikeville, who refined her technique and spin. Even through challenging times like COVID, Rachel’s commitment never wavered.

She also competed at a high level in travel softball and basketball, forming lifelong friendships and learning how to compete with some of the best athletes in the region.

Closer to home, she trained with Ellen Renfro, an All-American from the University of Tennessee, who helped elevate her pitching even further.

But behind every great athlete is a community that believes in them.

Rachel’s journey at Pineville began with Coach Danita Biliter, who first recognized her potential. Coach Robbie Partin gave her early opportunities at the middle and high school levels. And Coach Robert Daniels—known as “Bobby D”—has been a constant force in her athletic career, pushing her to always find another level. As many have heard him say, “Come on 1-4, shut it down!” — words that pushed Rachel to compete harder every single time.

On the basketball side, Coaches Debbie and Elgie Green have played a major role in shaping Rachel into the strong, disciplined athlete she is today. Through high expectations and tough coaching, they helped her grow mentally and physically.

Rachel Howard’s story is far from over as she is fixing to make the next step. With all her support, and her love for the game, she will not be slowing down anytime soon.

A final note Thank you Rachel, for all the memories, from all of us at the Bryant Family Medicine All Sports Media. And a very big thank you from a writer, that didn't ever forget, you was the first baseball/softball guest he had on his new show. You opened that door for many others, and more than did your part.

Thank You
